De l'atelier à l'industrie : les ouvriers de l'imprimerie aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles
Abstract
The first printing press arrived in Quebec in 1764. The author outlines the evolution of printing in the province from it artisan period (1764 to 1860) where Francophone and Anglophone printers also played the role of journalist, editor and bookstore owner, to the industrial era (1860-1900) where printing became a specialized trade. The author describes printers' working conditions during this latter period, and their union activities to improve their working conditions and defend their control of their trade.
