Abstract
Maude Abbott (1869-1940) graduated in arts from McGill in 1890, but was barred from pursuing a degree in medicine at the university because of her sex. She enrolled at Bishop’s University and received her medical degree in 1894. A disciple of Dr. William Osler, Abbott contributed a well-received chapter on “Congenital Heart Disease” to his text, Modern Medicine (1908). Apart from a two-year period, she spent her whole career in the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University.
