Abstract
A biographical sketch of Andrew Fernando Holmes (1797-1860), the first Dean of McGill University's Medical Faculty. Information is also given on the founding, in 1822, of the Montreal Medical Institution, the first medical school established in Canada. McGill's Medical Faculty came into existence in 1829 when the Montreal Medical Institution became attached to the university. William Robertson (1784-1844) was the first head of the faculty; Holmes replaced Robertson in 1843 as head with the title of secretary. In 1854 this title was changed to dean.
