Title
The Reverend Richard Jackson, Missionary to the Sulpicians
Abstract
The American-born Jackson John Richards (1787-1847), also known as Jean Richard and Richard Jackson, was a Methodist itinerant preacher who came to Montreal in 1807 with the purpose of converting the Catholic priests of the Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice to Protestantism. However, the opposite took place and Richards converted to Catholicism and entered the seminary, where he was ordained a priest in 1813. He served firstly at the chapel of Montreal's Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours Church, ministering to the city's then small but growing Irish Catholic population. As that English-speaking population grew, in 1831 Richards and the Irish Catholics moved to the more spacious Recollet Chapel on Notre-Dame Street. In 1833 he also became the Saint-Sulpice seminary's bursar. In 1847, a typhus epidemic broke out among Irish immigrants fleeing the potato famine in their homeland, and thousands landed in Montreal where the stricken were herded into lazarets at Point St. Charles. Father Richards went to their aid, and succumbed to the disease. He died on July 23, 1847 and is buried in Montreal's Notre-Dame Church.
