Title
Pèlerinage organisé en Israël pour jeunes Juifs montréalais : un exemple de rite de passage contemporain
Abstract
The author examines the "Israel Experience" program -- a free educational trip to Israel -- for Jewish youth in Montreal between the ages of 18 and 26. For ten days, the youths go through an intense physical, intellectual and emotional experience where little time off is allowed, even for sleep. This trip to the Holy Land is understood as: 1) a pilgrimage to a Jewish "sacred centre" and 2) a highly structured rite of passage. The author analyzes the hike the young people undertake to the summit of Mount Masada which she describes as a through ritual action where participants' bodies and emotions are mobilized and a connection is made between present time and epic time. The author argues that the Israel Experience program is designed to provoke what is called variously "internal conversion" or "reconversion." This process generally involves an increase of orthodoxy or a feeling of guilt for those who do not become more orthodox. She notes that in this case, reconversion concerns three aspects of identity : religion, ethnicity and nationality.
