Development Plans, Salt Mines and the English Community of Grosse Isle, Magdalen Islands
Abstract
Six percent of the residents of the Magdalen Islands (Les Îles de la Madeleine) were English-speaking in 1978. Most lived in either the communities of Grosse Isle or Entry Island. The author examines the internal and external influences that have been critical to the evolution of Grosse Isle and its struggle for survival. The primary element of the community's prosperity from the 1800s until the 1950s was the inshore fishery, which has been in decline since that time. In the 1970s, a salt mine was developed at Grosse Isle. The author explains the community's reaction to the development plan for the mine.
