Saint-Henri and the Urban Uncanny: A Comparative Analysis of Hubert Aquin’s À Saint Henri le cinq septembre (1962), and Shannon Walsh’s Saint-Henri The 26th of August (2011)
Abstract
A comparative study of two documentary films made in and about the Montreal neighbourhood of Saint-Henri. The author compares Hubert Aquin's À Saint Henri le cinq septembre (1962), and Shannon Walsh's Saint-Henri The 26th of August (2011). The author explores the various methods used by the two directors in their respective modern and postmodern approaches to represent the physical spaces of Saint-Henri, as well as the people who inhabited this post-industrial (1962), and now quickly gentrifying (2002) neighbourhood. The film by Aquin (1929-1977) is about the first day of school for children and their families in the working class neighbourhood. Forty-nine years later, the Concordia and McGill-educated Walsh (b. 1976) assembled sixteen filmmakers to once again record the first day of school for children in Saint-Henri.
