Abstract
The author examines three turn-of-the-twentieth century periodicals -- The McGill University Magazine, Queen's Quarterly, and The Canadian Magazine -- to demonstrate how elite Canadian writers responded to the world around them using such gendered language as "manliness", "manhood" and "masculinity".
