From Cohen to Carson: The Poet’s Novel in Canada
|
Abstract |
The author argues that Canadian poets have turned to the novel because of the limitations of the lyric, but have used lyric methods – puns, symbolism, repetition, juxtaposition – to create a mode of narrative that contrasts sharply with the descriptive conventions of realist and plot-driven novels. Includes detailed case studies of works by Montreal poets Leonard Cohen (1934-2016), author of the novels The Favorite Game (1963) and Beautiful Losers (1966) and A.M. Klein (1909-1972), author of The Second Scroll (1951).
