L’analyse des classes sociales dans la sociologie canadienne de langue anglaise (1895-1965)
Abstract
The author notes that it is widely believed that Canadian sociologists generally ignored the study of social class prior to the publication of John Porter's The Vertical Mosaic in 1965. This conception is false. The author points out that there were several sociologists who, between 1895 and 1965, made contributions to the study of social class in Canadian sociology. Among those undertaking sociological studies during this pre-1965 era that the author examines are Herbert Brown Ames (1863-1954), a Montreal municipal reformer who, in 1897, published The City Below the Hill, based on his survey of the working-class inhabitants of Point St. Charles and Griffintown; and Carl A. Dawson, Everett Hughes, and Leonard Marsh at McGill University, the first university in Canada to introduce a sociology department.
