Title
Les quotidiens montréalais de 1945 à 1985 : morphologie et contenu
Abstract
A comparison of four Montreal daily newspapers of 1945 (Le Devoir, La Presse, Montreal-Matin and the Montreal Star) with four dailies from 1985 (Le Devoir, La Presse, Journal de Montréal and The Gazette). The author concludes that the papers from 1985 were bigger in size but lighter ("plus aéré") in content with more numerous illustrations/photographs. A closer look reveals even deeper transformations. Structurally, he argues, the theme did not change, but the focus shifted: newspapers were more interested in entertainment and consumption to the detriment of the categories relating to public affairs. Except in the case of the Montreal Star/The Gazette, attention in the French papers were increasingly concentrated on the Quebec scene, with the Canadian and international dimensions being less present in 1985 than forty years earlier.
