Examines the career of Sir Frederick Haldimand (1718-1791) to demonstrate the opportunities and limits for advancement of a foreign-born officer within the British hierarchy. Born in Yverdon, Switzerland, Haldimand was twice military governor of Trois-Rivières, and governor of Quebec from 1777 until 1786.
