The role played by Montreal's Young Men's Hebrew Benevolent Society, founded in 1863 and re-named the Baron de Hirsch Institute in 1890, at the turn of the twentieth century in aiding Eastern European Jewish refugees, escaping the pogroms and antisemitism, to settle in Canada.
