Les débuts du mouvement de tempérance dans le Bas-Canada, 1828-1840
Abstract
The author outlines the introduction of the temperance movement in Lower Canada and the role played by the Protestant clergy and other principal organizers of the movement. The temperance movement in the colony began in June 1828 in Montreal at a meeting in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church that resulted in the founding of the Montreal Society for the Promotion of Temperance. The Quebec Temperance Society, under the presidency of John Neilson, was founded in Quebec City in April 1831, and the Montreal Young Men's Temperance Society was founded in November 1831 under the presidency of James R. Orr. The author also describes the founding of Temperance Society of His Majesty's 24th Regiment of Foot in 1832.
