Title
The Social and Economic Development of Settlers in the Quebec Townships, 1851-1870
Abstract
A comparative study of the English- and French-speaking farmers of Compton and Winslow Townships during the second half of the nineteenth century. The author maintains that the principal reason why English-speaking farmers were more prosperous than their French-speaking neighbours was that the former were willing to consolidate their holdings and were more able to exploit market conditions, while the latter group tended to maintain small farms.
