Abstract
Montreal poet Louis Dudek (1918-2001) joined with other key figures in the first and second waves of Canadian poetic modernism to establish the country's most influential "little magazines" and literary presses of the mid-twentieth century. He co-founded such Montreal-based magazines as First Statement, Northern Review, Delta, CIV/n, as well as Contact Press, Delta Canada and DC Books. He taught in the English Department of McGill University from 1951 to 1984. Dudek, fellow-Montreal poet Irving Layton (1912-2006), and Toronto poet Raymond Souster (1921-2012) founded Contact magazine and Contact Press in 1952. The magazine lasted until 1954, but Contact Press put out books until 1967.
