Abstract
An examination of the role of nineteenth century working class Montreal women -- first as girls and then married women, then widows -- in the family economy. Studied are women in the predominately English-speaking St. Anne ward and the predominately French-speaking Saint-Jacques ward during the period of the city's industrial development.
