The Origins of British-Quebec Merchant Ideology: New France, the British Atlantic and the Constitutional Periphery, 1720-70
Abstract
An analysis of the ideology of British merchants of Quebec during the first decade of British rule. The author points out that these merchants favoured a Protestant constitution with an elected assembly and English civil and criminal law. Their ideology was closely associated with Protestantism and an emphasis on economic development.
