Quelques habitudes de vie et indicateurs de santé des anglophones du Québec
Abstract
The authors analyze the state of health of English-speaking Quebecers, their lifestyle habits and certain health-related indicators, examined by territory of residence and compared with those of French-speaking Quebecers. Their data came from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) for the 2003, 2007-2008 and 2009-2010 cycles. The authors found that there were few statistically significant differences between the lifestyle habits and health status indicators of Anglophones and Francophones, regardless of survey cycle or territory of residence. Among the few significant differences, Anglophones consume less fruit and vegetables and are more often overweight than Francophones, but they are less sedentary than Francophones. They also have a stronger sense of belonging to the community than Francophones. The authors point out that the relatively small English-speakers sampled reduces the statistical power, which partly explains why the two language groups are not often distinguished from one another. They suggest that the English-speaking population of Quebec could certainly benefit from a larger health survey with more respondents. This would make it possible to obtain more robust statistical results and to verify more reliably whether the English-speaking population differs from the French-speaking population in terms of lifestyle habits and other health indicators, and thus to identify more specific interventions aimed at them.
