Abstract
The Chelsea Pioneer Cemetery is the burial site of Pte. Richard Rowland Thompson, the Irish-born member of the Royal Canadian Regiment who was awarded one of eight scarfs knitted by Queen Victoria and presented to colonial private soldiers for gallantry during the second South African War, known popularly as the Boer War (1899-1902). Thompson was the only Canadian soldier to receive this honour. These scarfs are considered by some to supersede the Victoria Cross. Thompson's scarf is now on display at the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa.
