Title
Selected Bibliography : Frances Moore Brooke
Abstract
A bibliography on the life and works of British novelist, essayist, playwright and translator Frances Brooke (1724-1789), who lived in Quebec City from 1763 to 1768. She published The History of Emily Montague (1769), a novel of Quebec society, considered by some to be the first Canadian novel. The History of Emily Montague is an epistolary novel that recounts the courtship and marriage of three different sets of lovers in Canada and England from April 1766 to November 1768. Although a love story, Brooke's novel includes many reflections on social norms and the relations between the English, French, Huron, and Iroquois cultures in Quebec.
