Abstract
The Irish-born William Evans (1786-1857) immigrated to Lower Canada in 1819 where he began to farm in Montreal at Côte-Saint-Paul. He was soon regarded as one of the most dynamic farmers in the Montreal region, with almost two-hundreds acres under crop and twenty-two head of cattle. From 1830 to 1847 he served as secretary-treasurer of the Agricultural Society of the District of Montreal; from 1847 to 1852 he performed the same duties in the Agricultural Society of Lower Canada; and in 1852 he became secretary-treasurer of the new Board of Agriculture of Lower Canada. Evans was also an author and journalist. In 1835 his “A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Agriculture” was published, translated into French the following year. In 1837 his “Agricultural Improvement by the Education of Those Who Are Engaged in It as a Profession” was published, and in 1856 his “Review of the Agriculture of Lower Canada, with suggestions for its amelioration” was published, the latter a series of articles he had written for the Montreal Gazette.
