Title
Gustav Hittler, Bund Organizer in Montreal and Return Migrant to Germany
Abstract
The author examines the life of Gustav Hittler, a German immigrant to Montreal, and the challenges he faced during the Great Depression. The author notes that Hittler's circumstances in Quebec led him to admire German fascism and he occupied an influential position within the Deutscher Bund of Montreal, a Nazi-affiliated organization. Due to the Great Depression and his embrace of Nazi ideology, Hittler found living in Canada intolerable. This predicament led to his return migration to Germany in July 1939, part of a migration of German speakers to the Third Reich during the late 1930s. The author offers new information on Deutscher Bund activity and its administration in Canada.
