Title
‘Their Colonial Condition’: Connections Between French-Canadians and Irish Catholics in the Nation and the Dublin University Magazine
Abstract
A comparison between Quebec and Ireland as presented in the Irish periodical press from the 1830s to the 1850s. Both the Irish nationalist Nation and the Tory Protestant Dublin University Magazine drew parallels between Quebec and Ireland: both areas were politically and culturally divided; both witnessed religious and political turmoil; and both were partly populated by British settlers. The Nation sympathized with their Catholic brethren in Quebec and hoped that reforms in Canada might lead to similar events in Ireland. The Dublin University Magazine was resistant to encouraging changes in Canada for fear of setting dangerous precedents in Ireland.
