Abstract |
An examination of the Irish migration to Montreal between the Famine period and Confederation. Although not equipped for material success when they first arrived in 1847, the author points out that the Irish immigrants had the great advantage of entering a city as newcomers to an Irish community already well established and, on the whole, well regarded. The author examines the physical, spiritual, economic and political adjustments of these immigrants to life in Montreal.
