Abstract |
The author examines the demographic evolution of the Italian community in Quebec over the period 1851 to 1976. Specifically, he looks at this community's language choices by crossing such variables as ethnicity, mother tongue, language spoken and official language. He also looks at place of birth and age group, as well as data on endogamous and exogamous couples and their home language. The author argues that the early Italian immigrants originally integrated with the Francophone community, often via an exogamous marriage, but this trend reversed with post-Second World War arrivals, whose children associate themselves with the Anglophone community.
