Title
The Foundation Documents of the Jewish Community Council of Montreal
Abstract
The author examines the founding document of the Jewish Community Council of Montreal in the context of the North American kehillah movement of the early twentieth century. He also situates the document in the context of the internal dynamics of the Montreal Jewish community of the 1920s. The Jewish Community Council of Montreal was established in 1922 when a group of concerned individuals gathered together to create a central communal body, modeled on the kehillah of eastern Europe, to control and represent the city's burgeoning Jewish community.
