A partial account of Samuel Hull Wilcocke (c. 1766-1833), a British-born journalist and controversialist, who arrived in Montreal in 1817 and who, through his short-lived weekly periodical "Free Press" (Oct. 1822-Sept. 1823), denounced the attempt by the "Scotch Faction" of Montreal to unite the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada for its own economic gains under the Union Bill of 1822.
