Abstract |
A survey of paintings and sculptures executed in the Eastern Townships from the beginning of the first decades of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century. The author describes the works of such artists as William Bartlett, who sketched the area between the 1840s and 1850s, and Bartlett's influence on later Townships' artists such as William Stewart Hunter. One of the Eastern Townships most famous artists was landscape painter Aaron Allan Edson (1846-1888), born in Stanbridge East and who painted scenery around Memphremagog and Orford, and Missisquoi Bay and Glen Sutton. The author also mentions the Township's first art gallery, founded by Samuel F. Morey in Sherbrooke in 1882.
