Abstract |
A summary of the author's book of the same title. The article gives a brief description of the by-electoral campaign and violence that took place in April and May 1832 in a riding in what is now the central west part of Montreal that pitted Dr. Daniel Tracey (c.1794-1832), a reformist supporter of Louis-Joseph Papineau’s Parti canadien, against Stanley Bagg (1788-1853). A riot broke out during the election on May 21st, and soldiers opened fire on the rioters. Three people (Casimir Chauvin, Francois Languedoc and Pierre Billet) were killed and two others were wounded. Tracey narrowly defeated Bagg in the election.
