Abstract |
The author examines the contribution of Jewish artists to modern art in Quebec between 1930 and 1945. In 1939, the Contemporary Arts Society was founded to promote public awareness of modern art in Montreal. The author points out that among those members of the Society and among those painters who were recognized by critics as the new "moderns", were Jewish artists. Among the painters mentioned by the author are Jack Beder, Sam Borenstein, Rita Bransky, Bernard Mayman, Louis Muhlstock, Ernst Neumann, Herman Heimlich,Sylvia Ary, Alexander Bercovitch, Moe Reinblatt, and Eric Golberg.
