From Politics to Profit: The Commercialization of Canadian English-Language Daily Newspapers, 1890-1920
|
Abstract |
During the period 1890-1920, English-language publishers in Canada changed the role of daily newspapers from serving primarily as partisan adjuncts of political parties into independent corporate entities. Advertising, rather than political patronage, became the major source of revenue. To attract greater circulation for more advertising, publishers supplanted the political and educative function of newspapers with sensationalism and entertainment. Hugh Graham’s Montreal Daily Star was a leader in this transformation process.
