Title
Quebec Sovereignty and the Challenge of Linguistic and Ethnocultural Minorities: Identity, Differences and the Politics of Ressentiment
Abstract
The author argues that Quebec experiences the same power struggles between majority and minority groups common in other Western countries. He argues that prominent in these struggles is the resort to “ressentiment,” a term coined by Friedrich Nietzsche which holds that minorities often adopt a victim strategy and try to shame power holders into acquiescing. However, Quebec’s Francophone majority believes that it has been a victim at the hands of Canada’s Anglophone majority for centuries and fails to see the province’s Anglophone minority as victims.
