Title
Family Contexts of Fertility and Infant Survival in Nineteenth-Century Montreal
Abstract
Infant mortality in Montreal in 1859 was more dependent on ethnicity (French-Canadian, English Protestant or Irish Catholic) than on the parents’ socio-economic status. Of the 4,000 infants born in Montreal that year, more French-Canadian infants died before their first birthday than English Protestant or Irish Catholic babies.
