Abstract
Drummondville was first settled in 1815 by demobilized British soldiers from the War of 1812, under the leadership of Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick George Heriot (1786-1844). The purpose of the town was to provide a home for some 300 demobilized war veterans and their families and to guard the Saint-François River against future American attacks. Most of the veterans abandon their properties soon after arrival. In the 1820s, the Quebec Emigrant Society entices immigrants from the British Isles, mostly from Ireland, to settle in the area. French Canadians begin to move into the area in the mid-1830s and, the author points out, most of the Anglophones begin to move out of the area.
