La couverture de la crise soudanaise dans la presse montréalaise, 1885-1904
Abstract
The author focuses on the Sudanese crisis coverage within Montreal popular press at the end of the nineteenth century. His comparative study of the coverage of the British-French imperial rivalry in Montreal's La Presse and Montreal Daily Star newspapers shows that, in the Quebec context, the two main political cultures, imperialism and nationalism, coexisted. The author examines the period starting in 1885 with the first report in La Presse about British interventions in the Sudan, leading toward the Fashoda incident in 1898 when France sought to gain control of the Upper Nile river basin and thereby exclude Britain from the Sudan. The author's study period ends with the signature of the Entente cordiale in 1904, which brought an end to the main colonial rivalries between the United Kingdom and France. The author concludes that the Montreal Daily Star supported an expansive Anglophone Canadian political culture tied to British imperialism. On the other hand, La Presse tended to draw away from this ideology, supporting a narrow isolationist Canadian nationalism.
