Keeping Our Good Girls Good: The Young Women's Christian Association of Canada, 1895-1920
Abstract
The YWCA began in Montreal in 1874 and in Quebec City in 1875. Organized by urban middle-class Protestant evangelical church members, the YWCAs were meant to aid the growing number of young immigrant women from the British Isles and Europe maintain moral standards. A national coordinating body - The Young Women's Christian Association - was founded in 1883. The aim of this association was to control the direction of social change in the country by attacking the problem of the "Modern Girl" and by protecting the moral standards and physical purity of young women through the preservation of their traditional close ties to home, family and church.
