Title
Les Chinois sur papier : étude des représentations du quartier chinois de Montréal et de ses habitants dans la presse (1930-1985)
Abstract
The author examines the transformations and development of the portrayals conveyed by the main Montreal newspapers (La Presse, Le Devoir, The Montreal Star, The Gazette and La Patrie) regarding the area of Montreal known as Chinatown between 1930 and 1985. To do this, the author analyzes the changes affecting the conflictual image of this district which passes from a “Chinese colony” of criminality, corruption, conflicts, integration, diversity, foreigners and mysteries into a Montreal area of tourism, party, as well as "exotic" shops and restaurants. The author concludes that these visions, sometimes contradictory, present a Chinatown with multiple negative and positive representations that show a place that is both closed and open, mixed and ethnic, foreign and similar.
