Abstract
The Irish-born Patrick James Whelan (c.1840-1869) was accused of the assassination of Irish Montreal federal politician Thomas D'Arcy McGee (1825-1868) in Ottawa on April 7, 1868. Although he professed his innocence at his eight-day trial in September 1868, he was found guilty and publicly-hanged on February 11, 1869.
