Des flambeaux et des silhouettes : Nuit, ville, crime et insécurité à Québec (1820-1845)
Abstract
An examination of Quebec City newspapers reporting on security and insecurity in that town relating to crime in the early nineteenth century. The author examines Le Canadien, the Quebec Mercury and the Quebec Gazette newspapers, three of forty-two papers published in Lower Canada between 1815 and 1840. At that time when Quebec City was experiencing an unprecedented demographic and economic expansion, he points out that the evolution of the state of insecurity overwhelmed the towns residents, whose nights could sometimes be quite dangerous.
