Entre pittoresque et gardenesque : l'architecture et les jardins périurbains du XIXe siècle de la ville de Québec
Abstract
The author examines the aesthetic theories of landscape and landscaping of three peri-urban gardens of nineteenth century Quebec City. Specifically, she studies the gardens of Woodfield, Spencer Wood, and Spencer Grange in the Quebec City suburb of Sillery. All three estates were owned by members of Quebec City's nineteenth century Anglophone elite. Woodfield was owned by William Sheppard (1784-1867), who acquired the property in 1816. Spencer Wood was acquired by Michael Henry Perceval (c.1779-1829) in 1815 and was later acquired in 1835 by Henry Atkinson (1790-1852), and Spencer Grange was acquired by James MacPherson Le Moine (1825-1912) in 1860. The author examines the links between garden landscaping, horticultural practices, greenhouse architecture and residential architecture, taking into account British and American influences.
