Abstract
The first steam-powered vessel in Canadian waters was the "Accommodation", introduced in 1809 by Montrealer John Molson. The author speculates that the boat's wooden hull was built at the shipyard of Hart Logan, located across from Molson's brewery. In 1833, the "Royal William", built for the Quebec and Halifax Steam Navigation Company by the Campbell and Black's shipyard in Quebec City, became the second ship ever to make a transatlantic crossing principally under steam power.
