The Montreal Ship Channel, 1805-1865
Abstract
An historical and geographical study of the opening to sea-going vessels of the stretch of the St. Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City in the first part of the nineteenth century. This transformed Montreal from an inland river town to a seaport city. The author examines the specific measures taken to open up the channel to ocean shipping in the years 1805 to 1865. 1805 was the date of creation of Trinity House, Quebec, which marked the inception of officially controlled pilotage and navigation in the modern sense. By 1865, channel improvement techniques had provided a channel three hundred feet wide and twenty feet deep.
