Abstract
At the turn of the twentieth century, the Anglican Church’s Montreal Diocesan Theological College was characterized by intense missionary zeal combined with British Canadian imperialist sentiment. As evidence, the author points out that students, alumni and faculty alike supported the British side in the Boer War, and scorned the life and superstitions of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples whom they wished to bring into the Christian Canadian fold. The zeal was, in part, defensive of their English identity, as the diocesan population was a minority in a largely French Canadian and Catholic province.
