Title
Saint Patrick’s of Montreal: The Biography of a Basilica
Abstract
Montreal’s St. Patrick’s Basilica celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1997. The author offers a glimpse at the creative tensions that resulted when French-speaking Roman Catholics and English-speaking Irish Roman Catholics clashed over the building of the church in the 1840s. He tells the story of stubborn bishops, dynamic pastors and colourful parishioners who contributed to the evolution of the basilica from a branch-chapel of Notre Dame, to the parent church of Montreal’s 250,000 English-speaking Catholics.
