Abstract
From the end of eighteenth century and throughout the nineteenth century a series of quarantine establishments were developed in Canada and in the United States. The author points out that these lazarettos were heavily based on the romantic, naturalistic and landscapist ideas that began to germinate at this time in the field of urbanism. The author analyzes these ideas and puts them in relation with the Canadian lazarettos, specifically with the Grosse-Île quarantine station down river from Quebec City. Since this quarantine station was the main gateway to Canada throughout the nineteenth century, and is mostly known for its burial site of thousands of Irish immigrants who died from typhus on the island in 1847, the author has made it the main focus of his study, arguing that it gives a precise depiction about the different approaches regarding epidemic prevention in Canada during this period.
