The Cultural Diffusion of Hockey in Montreal, 1890-1910
Abstract
French-speaking Montrealers learned the sport of ice hockey by collaborating with Irish-Catholic players in amateur and professional leagues. They gained enough experience to create two French-speaking teams that successfully competed against English Canadians in the 1910s. The author examines how this sport was diffused from Anglophone to Francophone groups in the city. The author notes that between 1890 and 1897 a few Francophones were playing hockey, learned by watching Irish Montreal students who studied at the same school. From 1898, a few French-Canadian teams competed in English leagues. After difficulties between Francophones and Anglophones in organized leagues, the Francophones decided to reorganize their teams in 1908. In 1910, a new team, the Montréal Canadiens, started to play in a professional league.
