Histoire de la Commission des écoles catholiques de Montréal : le développement d'un réseau d'écoles publiques en milieu urbain
Abstract
The "Commission des écoles catholiques de Montréal" (CECM), known in English as the "Montreal Catholic School Commission" (MCSC), was created in 1846 to operate French-language and English-language Catholic public schools in the district of Montreal. It was created at the same time as the "Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal", when education in the province was divided along religious "confessional" lines. During its existence, the CECM/MCSC was the largest school board in Quebec. In 1998, Quebec's confessional school boards were replaced by linguistic boards. The author's book celebrates the 150th anniversary of the CECM/MCSC, examining such themes as the democratization of education, the role of the Church, the influence of political institutions, and the financial inequalities between Francophone (Catholic) and Anglophone (Protestant) boards.
