Title
The French and English Social Elites of Montreal: A Comparison of La ligue de la jeunesse feminine with the Junior League
Abstract
The Junior League for the Promotion of Settlement Movements was founded in 1901 in New York City by a group of well-to-due young women to improve child health, nutrition and literacy among immigrants. In 1912, the Junior League of Montreal became the first League in Canada. It disbanded in 2006. During its ninety-four years of existence, more than 2,700 Montreal women were members of the League. In 1926, Montrealer Thérèse F. Casgrain founded La ligue de la jeunesse féminine, based on the Junior League model and mission of helping the poor.
