La situation linguistique dans les écoles primaires et secondaires, 1971-1972 à 1978-1979
Abstract
The author notes that the language of education has been an important element in the linguistic debate that has taken place in Quebec since the late 1960s. Three laws passed by the National Assembly (Bill 63, Bill 22 and Bill 101) dealt with this question in less than eight years. The author asks: What has been the evolution of the distribution of the Quebec school population by language of instruction with regard to the application of these laws? It is this development (circa 1979) that he describes in this report. Using statistics from the Quebec Ministry of Education, the author examines the evolution of the linguistic composition of the primary and secondary school population through two variables: the language of education received by the student and the student's mother tongue. The period covered ranges from the 1971-72 school year to the 1978-79 school year. The author's report also contains an analysis of the school linguistic situation for the school administrative regions of Quebec.
